Retro C Touchscreen Is Black or Will Not Start
Use this guide when the Retro C touchscreen is blank, remains black after power-up, shows no application, or the display and computer do not appear to start.
Applicability
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Product | Retro C |
| Subsystem | Touchscreen display, Retro C computer, and AC power |
| Hardware generation | Older and newer Retro C touchscreen-computer installations |
| Skill level | Operator for external checks; qualified electrical technician for panel or circuit testing |
| Lockout/tagout | Required before opening an enclosure or touching wiring |
| Estimated time | 10–30 minutes |
| Tools or parts | Flashlight; meter only for qualified technicians; known-good display cable if approved |
Before You Begin
Record what happened immediately before the screen went black: a facility outage, normal shutdown, software restart, cable work, or unexplained loss of display. Do not repeatedly cycle the main disconnect. One controlled restart is enough to determine whether the problem repeats.
The optional Retro C 24 V UPS supplies the VC1 control system; it does not prove that the touchscreen computer or display has AC power.
Determine Which Part Is Off
1. Check for signs that the display has power
Look for the display’s power indicator or a faint backlight. If the indicator is off, verify the display power connection and the approved AC source. If the indicator is on but the screen is black, continue to the computer and video checks.
Do not open the touchscreen enclosure or test energized terminals unless you are a qualified electrical technician following the facility procedure.
2. Check whether the Retro C computer is running
Look for the computer power indicator and normal fan or startup activity.
- Display off and computer off: investigate the shared AC supply, disconnect, approved outlet, or circuit protection.
- Display on and computer off: confirm the computer power connection and whether it is configured to restart after AC power returns.
- Computer on and display black: inspect the external video connection and display input before replacing the computer.
- Startup logo appears but Retro C does not load: record the exact last screen shown and contact support before replacing storage media or reinstalling software.
3. Check external connections
With the machine in the required safe state, confirm that the display power, video, touchscreen USB, computer power, network, and Retro C USB-drive connections are fully seated. Photograph and label every connection before removing it.
A disconnected touchscreen USB cable can prevent touch control while the display still shows an image. A disconnected video cable can produce a black screen while the computer continues running.
4. Perform one controlled restart
Use the approved shutdown and startup procedure. Restore power and allow the computer adequate time to boot. Watch for:
- A manufacturer or BIOS logo.
- The operating-system startup screen.
- The Retro C application.
- A message indicating missing storage, network, or software.
Record the last stage reached. Repeatedly interrupting startup can create additional problems and does not identify the failed component.
5. If the problem followed a facility outage
If the computer works when its power button is pressed but does not automatically restart after AC power returns, confirm the applicable BIOS power-recovery setting:
- Configure a Newer Computer to Power On After an Outage
- Configure an Older Computer to Power On After an Outage
Change only the setting identified in the correct article for that computer generation.
6. Before replacing the computer
Do not assume a black screen means the computer has failed. First separate loss of AC power, failed display power, an incorrect display input, a loose video cable, a boot problem, and a failed computer. If replacement is confirmed, use Replace the Retro C Computer.
What Correct Looks Like
- The display power indicator is in its normal state.
- A startup image appears after power is restored.
- The operating system and Retro C software load without intervention.
- Touch input follows the displayed pointer correctly.
- The computer restarts automatically after an approved power-cycle test when that feature is configured.
When to Contact Enventek
Contact Enventek Technical Support when the computer stops at an unfamiliar boot message, the screen intermittently blanks, the display has power but receives no verified video signal, or circuit protection opens again after reset. Provide photos of the last screen, computer and display indicator states, and the event that preceded the failure.
