SmartConveyor V40 Encoder: Route, Replacement, and Verification

The V40 conveyor encoder measures conveyor-shaft movement so the control can track distance and position. Use this article when the encoder count is missing or erratic, conveyor tracking is inconsistent, or the encoder or its cable requires replacement.

Safety: Lock out the conveyor and verify that the shaft cannot move before removing the encoder cover, loosening the clamp, or opening the electrical panel.

Encoder location and cable route

The encoder is installed at the end of the conveyor shaft. Its cable passes through liquid-tight conduit to the conveyor electrical panel and connects directly to the VC1.

Inspect before replacement

  • Confirm that the encoder body is mounted securely and does not rotate with the shaft.
  • Check the shaft clamp and socket-head cap bolt for looseness.
  • Inspect the flanges, screws, and bracket for cracks or misalignment.
  • Inspect the liquid-tight conduit and cable for cuts, crushing, moisture, or pulling.
  • Check the RJ45 connection at the VC1 and record the VC1 LED pattern.

Install the encoder

  1. Remove the failed encoder and inspect the shaft for damage or buildup.
  2. Slide the replacement encoder fully onto the shaft in the same orientation.
  3. Tighten the socket-head cap bolt so the encoder is clamped to the shaft without misalignment.
  4. Reinstall and secure the flange screws and protective cover.

Connect the cable

Route the encoder cable through the existing liquid-tight path into the conveyor electrical box. Connect the RJ45 plug directly to the correct VC1 Encoder port; do not connect it to the network port.

What Correct Looks Like

  1. Restore power and confirm the expected VC1 status lights.
  2. Observe the encoder count while jogging the conveyor at a controlled speed.
  3. Confirm that the count changes smoothly and in the correct direction without jumps or dropouts.
  4. Stop and restart the conveyor several times and confirm repeatable feedback.
  5. Run a controlled material test and verify that conveyor tracking remains accurate.

If the count remains stationary or intermittent, inspect the cable continuity, connector termination, VC1 port, and mechanical shaft connection before replacing another encoder.
