Common VFD Wiring to VC1s

When a VFD is wired to a VC1, several common wires are required for operation. This article explains those wires and their functions.

The standard VC1 movement wiring is described below. Digital inputs are activated by connecting the input to common. Depending on the drive, common may be labeled DCM, CM, or GND. These wires are normally contained in a single-stranded Cat 5 Ethernet cable.

Green Wire

The green wire is the run/stop command.

When this wire is active, the VFD is commanded to run. The VFD terminal is normally DI1 or FWD.

The VFD will run when DI1 or FWD is connected to the VFD’s common terminal.

The green wire connects to O1 (Output 1) on the VC1.

White/Green Wire

The white/green wire controls forward/reverse operation.

When this wire is active, the VFD is commanded to change direction. The VFD terminal is normally DI1 or FWD.

The white/green wire connects to O2 (Output 2) on the VC1.

Brown Wire

The brown wire is common and connects to DCM or CM.

If the drive has an ACM terminal, ACM and DCM must be connected for the drive to run.

Add a jumper from ACM to DCM if the drive has a dedicated ACM terminal.

Note: When using Cat 5e or 24 AWG wire with any VFD style, connect the brown wire from the VC1 to ACM, then add a jumper from ACM to DCM.

Orange Wire

The orange wire is a 0–10 V DC analog output. This wire sets the drive frequency and speed.

The voltage changes according to the requested drive speed and ramps up or down while positioning.

RS485+ and RS485-

These two wires are used together for VFD communication.

RS-485+ or SG+ is the positive signal.

RS-485− or SG− is the negative signal.

Some drives use an RJ11 connector, some use an RJ45 connector, and others use wiring terminals. An RJ11 connector will fit in an RJ45 jack and can be used in that configuration.

Note: Do not connect these wires to 24 V+. Doing so will damage the communication module, and the drive will lose RS-485 communication.

Extra Wires

Drives may contain additional wires depending on their application.

What Correct Looks Like

  • The VFD powers up without a wiring or communication fault.
  • Run, direction, and speed commands respond correctly from the VC1.
  • The displayed speed and physical motor direction match the commanded movement.
  • The Drive Disconnected warning remains cleared during repeated tests.
